“Study for The Wall, Cumbria” by Richard Gold

This painting was first shown at the Regional Invitational exhibit at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre in Kingston, Ontario in 1987. At this show, legendary Canadian artist, AndrĂ© Bieler, wandered through the exhibit with an entourage accompanying him. Although I stood right beside the painting, he didn’t know who I was or that I had any connection to the piece. He stopped at the picture, examined it, and declared, “That took real courage.” That was a defining moment in my life because it seemed that, at last, somebody in the know had finally “gotten it”… had understood what my work was all about.
